Friday 26 May 2000 Belo Horizonte: visit to Pampulha The shores of Pampulha lake in Belo Horizonte feature an important group of early works by Oscar Niemeyer. Between 1942 and 1945, the thirty-five year old architect created this loose assembly of public and leisure buildings - Church, Yacht Club, Museum (formerly Casino) and Dancing Pavilion - providing a full display of his bold, functional shapes and formal invention. Saturday 27 May 2000 Guided tour - Ouro Preto Guided tour - Mariana Among the historic towns scattered in the former gold-mining district of Minas Gerais, Ouro Preto is the best-reserved example of a colonial urban setting in Brazil. Highlights include the former Town Hall, the 1787 Mint building, bridges, fountains and several exceptional churches: Antonio Dias (1727); Rosário, with its circular plan (1785); the baroque Pilar (1731); the rococo Carmo (1772); and São Francisco de Assis, Aleijadunho's masterpiece. The nearby town of Mariana features a stunning plaza bordered by its own Town Hall, Carmo and São Francisco churches.
